Momenta's Craig Wheeler re-elected GPhA chair

2/10/2015

MIAMI — The Generic Pharmaceutical Association on Monday announced the election of its 2015 executive committee and board of directors. Craig Wheeler, president and CEO, Momenta Pharmaceuticals, was re-elected as GPhA board chairman.

“The generic drug industry is growing and is stronger than ever,”  Wheeler said. “GPhA members play a critical role in our nation’s health system — providing safe, effective, more affordable generic drugs for millions of people. I am extremely excited to continue to chair GPhA, seize the exciting opportunities ahead and usher in a new era of affordable medicine, particularly as we come closer to the day when the first biosimilars become available in the United States.”

Generic medicines have saved the U.S. system $1.5 trillion over the past decade, and $239 billion in 2013 alone, according to the 2014 Generic Drug Savings in the U.S. report, conducted by IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics on behalf of GPhA.

“GPhA is at the forefront of efforts to preserve the access to and savings on health care which our industry brings to bear at home and abroad,” said Ralph Neas, president and CEO, GPhA. “GPhA looks forward to partnering with industry, FDA, Congress and participants at all levels of the supply chain in order to preserve the intent of the landmark Hatch-Waxman law, meet Generic Drug User Fee Amendments goals, and encourage policies that ensure timely access to more affordable generic and biosimilar treatment options.”
