NACDS applauds release of collaborative MTM briefing document for state legislators

1/21/2010

ALEXANDRIA, Va. An organization catering to the drug retailing industry applauded the release of a briefing paper by the National Council of State Legislatures on the importance of pharmacist-medication therapy management services.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores said “Medication Therapy Management: Catching Errors, Saving Lives and Money,” a report developed by the National Council of State Legislatures, further illustrates the critical role that pharmacists play in helping to improve patient outcomes and save healthcare costs. It will be distributed to 7,300 state legislators, their key staff and NCSL subscribers.

The paper notes that 1-in-4 Americans do not follow directions when taking medication. This fact underscores the need for MTM services in the U.S. healthcare system, which are designed to enhance patient health, reduce costs and enhance the role of pharmacists in the healthcare delivery system.

“As the face of neighborhood healthcare, pharmacy is uniquely positioned to assist patients in managing their health care, providing advice on how to take medications, screenings vaccinations and other pharmacy services. NCSL is demonstrating healthcare leadership by highlighting innovative strategies to help patients take their medications appropriately,” said NACDS President and CEO Steve Anderson.
