Pharmacists: Not just Rx providers

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The news that pharmacists believe that most consumers buy over-the-counter products that were recommended by them further demonstrates the significant role that pharmacists play in the U.S. healthcare system.

As the article states, the APhA study found that pharmacists believe that 82% of consumers buy OTC products that actually were recommended to them by a pharmacist. Furthermore, the study found that pharmacists counsel 29 patients on average per week around the use of OTC medication.


Clearly, this news demonstrates that patients trust their pharmacist and are turning to them as a valued, convenient healthcare provider. It also demonstrates that patients are in need of information surrounding their health and health of their loved ones.


In light of the physician shortage, overflowing emergency rooms and soaring healthcare costs, it is more important than ever that pharmacy strengthen its footing on the frontlines of U.S. health care. Studies such as this one that communicate the vital role that pharmacists play in patients' lives comes at a critical time and is only growing increasingly important.
