Speculation on Amazon's prescription sales begins

As Amazon preps to close on its purchase of PillPack, there is mounting speculation about when it will begin selling prescription drugs.

Amazon’s approximately $1 billion purchase of online pharmacy PillPack, set to close in the second half of the year, could enable the company to sell generic or branded prescription medications as soon as the deal closes, according to CNBC.

According to the report, some experts speculate that Amazon will take a similar approach to the discounts it immediately introduced across Whole Foods Markets following the online giant’s acquisition of the natural foods grocer. Others expect the sale of prescription drugs are more than a year away, according to CNBC.

Regardless of when Amazon begins selling the prescriptions, those who pay cash for their meds could become the online giant’s first target audience, the report said.
