University of Buffalo launches first pre-pharmacy summer camp for high school students

The University at Buffalo is launching a pre-pharmacy summer camp for high school students across the United States who are interested in pursuing the profession.

According to the university, the three-day camp will be hosted by the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS). Nearly 60 students will get the inside scoop on the ins and outs of pharmacy practice through activities that simulate combining and dispensing medications and counseling patients.

The program will be held July 12-14 in Kapoor Hall on the UB South Campus. Activities will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

"By participating in this program, talented students can explore a health profession that joins their strong interests in math and science, and their desire to help others," said Christine Stumm, SPPS associate director of admissions and advisement. "The earlier students identify their career path, the sooner they can streamline their education and graduate study."

Students will be able to participate in hands-on activities, such as compounding; visit local clinical practices and research labs; and attend lectures by UB faculty and Buffalo-area SPPS alumni on topics that range from vaccinations to the future of the profession.

The camp also highlights educational opportunities at SPPS and recommends high school courses students can take to prepare for undergraduate pharmacy coursework.
