Upsher-Smith celebrates its centennial
Upsher-Smith celebrated its centennial anniversary at its headquarters in Maple Grove, Minn.
On Jan. 10, employees gathered to mark 100 years of Upsher-Smith’s heritage of formulating and manufacturing quality generics that have led to improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients.
In 1919, an English pharmacist named Fredrick Alfred Upsher Smith created Upsher-Smith, a company where he envisioned honesty and ethics as its driving forces, along with a constant focus on the welfare of patients and customers. Upsher-Smith quickly developed a reputation for excellence by perfecting the refinement of digitalis from the foxglove plant and producing it in a standardized potency with consistency in dosage from one batch to the next, an advancement never before achieved in the 134 years since the drug’s discovery, according to the company.
“As we reflect on the people, products and innovation that drove a period of rapid growth for Upsher-Smith over the last century, we are reminded that our steadfast commitment to improving the health and lives of patients through high-quality products and sustainable growth will drive us into our second century,” Upsher-Smith president and CEO Rusty Field said.
Upsher-Smith plans to diversify and expand its portfolio of products, while forging new partnerships that drive future innovation and growth.
In 2017, Sawai Pharmaceutical acquired Upsher-Smith, and the companies "plan to leverage each other for growth worldwide and embark on an exciting new chapter as they seek to deliver the best value for their stakeholders, and most importantly, do more good for the patients they serve," the company said.
