Publix announces $4B commitment to hunger alleviation efforts

11/25/2019

It’s the season of giving, and Publix is doing its part to help those in difficult situations.

The Lakeland, Fla.-based retailer announced that it would be pledging an additional $2 billion in food donations over the next 10 years, in addition to the $2 billion it donates in dairy, meat, produce and fresh-baked goods.

“You can’t always see hunger, but it is all around us,” Publix CEO Todd Jones said. “As a food retailer, our greatest opportunity to give back is by helping to alleviate food insecurity. That’s why for more than a decade we have worked to ensure millions of pounds of food have reached people in need in the communities we serve.”

Through its food recovery program, Publix’s associates gather foods that are no longer salable and donate them to more than 100 Feeding America member food banks and other nonprofit organizations, the company said.

“For over a decade, Publix has partnered with Feeding America and member food banks to help provide nourishing food to our neighbors in need. We are grateful for our long-standing partnership and for Publix’s commitment to fighting hunger,” Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America said.
