Amazon enables garage smart entry program for deliveries

4/23/2019
Garages are no longer just for parking cars or playing three-chord rock songs.

Amazon is making its Key for Garage “smart entry” program available to all eligible Amazon Prime members. Key for Garage enables customers to get deliveries in their garage through an integration of MyQ connected garage door opener technology from Chamberlain Group (CGI) with Amazon Key.

Using Key for Garage, customers monitor and accept Prime deliveries to their home from the Amazon Key app by selecting “In-garage delivery” at checkout. On delivery day, customers receive notifications via the Key app during every step of the delivery process, from when the package is en route, to when the garage door opens for the driver to deliver the package and then securely closes.

Additionally, any customer in the U.S. can use Key for Garage to manage access to their garage via the Key by Amazon app. Amazon first introduced Key for Garage in 37 select U.S. cities in January 2019.

Prime members who already have a myQ-connected garage door opener can link their Amazon and myQ accounts in the Key by Amazon app. Otherwise, they can purchase one of two Key Smart Garage kits: the myQ Smart Garage Hub—which adds connectivity to an existing garage door opener—or a new myQ-connected Chamberlain or LiftMaster Wi-Fi garage door opener.

Customers with a Cloud Cam can also choose to watch their delivery occur in real-time. Before the garage door opens, Amazon verifies that the correct driver is at the right address through an encrypted authentication process. Once this process is successfully completed, the door opens, and the driver will not move on to their next delivery until the garage door closes.

“We know it is important to keep innovating to make delivery as convenient as possible for customers, which is why we’re excited to now have Key for Garage available,” said Rohit Shrivastava, GM of Key by Amazon. “Today, we are thrilled to open Key by Amazon to millions of Prime members who can now have their Amazon packages delivered securely to their garages. With this new option, members can truly unlock the convenience of the Amazon experience.”

Also today, Amazon made Key by Amazon delivery available in 50 total U.S. cities and surrounding areas. The new cities are Charlotte, NC; Columbus, OH; Fresno, CA; Grand Rapids, MI; Hartford, CT; Las Vegas, NV; Norfolk, VA; Oklahoma City, OK; Omaha, NE; Rochester, NY; Stockton, CA; Virginia Beach, VA; and Wilmington, DE.

Amazon has been expanding the capabilities and features of Key since introducing the service in October 2017. In April 2018, Amazon added entry and exit video clips, as well as delivery to parked cars.
