Giant Eagle intros Drug Take-Back Box
Giant Eagle stepped up its safe medication disposal efforts during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
Those who shop at the retailer now have a new and permanent way to dispose of any expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications that can be found inside of their homes.
The Pittsburgh-based retailer is introducing shoppers to its new Drug Take-Back Box, which can be found near the in-store pharmacy at 10 of the locations it serves.
In an effort to continue the ongoing opioid epidemic fight, the box is secure, monitored and regularly emptied, the company said.
Medications often accumulate in the home, according to the DEA, and many residents in the United States don’t know how to properly get rid of them. Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them away can pose safety and environmental risks, the company said.
“At Giant Eagle, we strive to be not only a responsible pharmacy retailer but also a strong partner of the communities we serve,” Jannah Jablonowski, a Giant Eagle spokesperson said. “In advance of National Drug Take-back Day, we’re pleased to introduce what we hope will be a meaningful resource to our customers all year long.”
Locations participating with the Drug Take-Back Box efforts include Washington Giant Eagle, Shadyside Market District, Monroeville Giant Eagle, Altoona Giant Eagle, Mentor-on-the Lake Giant Eagle, Barberton Giant Eagle, Jamestown Giant Eagle, New Castle Giant Eagle, Yorktowne Giant Eagle and Elyria Giant Eagle.
