Hy-Vee celebrates National Family Meals month in September

8/30/2019
Hy-Vee is bringing families together for mealtime to commemorate National Family Meals month in September. The company is providing customers with information and resources that explain the benefits of family mealtime, as well as offer solutions that make eating together more manageable.

“In today’s ever-evolving and fast-paced world, it’s often difficult for families to find time to sit down and enjoy a meal together due to busy schedules,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman, CEO and president. “We believe family time is critical and Hy-Vee is committed to bringing families together by making mealtime easier.”

Created by the Food Marketing Institute, National Family Meals Month is intended to raise consumer awareness of the health and societal benefits of sharing frequent family meals. Research shows that children who share regular family meals typically display better grades, improved nutrition, stronger family relationships and higher self-esteem, and they are less likely to use drugs and alcohol.

“Recent research says that more than three-quarters of families report that conflicting schedules are the main barrier to eating together on a regular basis,” Edeker said. “That’s why Hy-Vee is providing tips and resources to give families easy, mealtime solutions so they can have at least one more family meal together each week.”

Hy-Vee’s efforts to support National Family Meals month in September includes the following:

  • At all Hy-Vee Market Grille and Market Grille Express restaurants, children ages 12 and younger eat free with the purchase of an adult entrée. This promotion runs every day in September;

  • Family-friendly daily recipes featuring simple ingredients will be shared on Hy-Vee’s social media platforms. In addition, weekly meal ideas will highlight grab-and-go dinner options to make dinnertime easy, and a digital Family Cooking Guide is now available on hy-vee.com that features tasty, easy-to-prepare meals. Also, customers can visit with a Hy-Vee dietitian at a local store for a complimentary family recipe book;

  • Hy-Vee’s more than 160 dietitians will continue to provide in-store consultation services with customers regarding their dietary needs and conduct free store tours and family nutrition walks to help shoppers make better nutrition choices. They also will lead educational courses for children and adults related to nutrition, lifestyle management and cooking; and

  • Every day in the month of September, four Hy-Vee locations will provide a complimentary one-hour family meal at a dining table located inside the store, where shoppers will be able to observe the family eating together and learn more about the benefits of family mealtime. Each participating family will also receive a $250 Hy-Vee gift card for future family meals. Hy-Vee customers can enter for a chance to participate by visiting www.bit.ly/HyVeeFamilyMeals. The deadline to enter is Sept. 7. Several local celebrities will help kick off the in-store dining event by eating with their families during the first week of September.
