Meijer prepares for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

4/25/2019
Months after launching its Consumer Drug Take-Back Program at its 241 locations across the Midwest, Meijer announced that more than four tons of unwanted and potentially hazardous medications have been disposed of.

"The response since installing the kiosks in all of our pharmacies is a strong indication that our customers appreciate having a safe and easy way to properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications," Jason Beauch, the vice president of Meijer Pharmacy said. "If you live near any Meijer store in the Midwest, then you have easy access to this new service."

With National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day approaching on April 27, the retailer’s pharmacists are continuing to prepare as customers take advantage of the program, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based company said.

Customers can use the kiosks during operating pharmacy hours to dispose of such unwanted, unused or expired medications as opioids, controlled substances and over-the-counter medications.

Though customers can ask for help if needed, the kiosks are positioned in pharmacies allowing for medications to be dropped off without any questions being asked.

Items not part of the program include needs or other sharp items, asthma inhalers, mercury thermometers, medications containing iodine, or illicit drugs as marijuana or any other obtained illegally.

Meijer pharmacists document and transport the disposal of medications on a regular basis, and complies with the rules and safety guidelines established by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and HIPAA privacy laws.
