4/1/2019
Publix’s current vice chairman, Barney Barnett, announced that he would be retiring from the company after 50 years of service on April 30.

Barnett, who is only one of 20 associates to reach this milestone, will remain on the board of Publix Supermarket Charities, and also has been named vice chairman emeritus, the Lakeland, Fla.-based company said.

“We are grateful for Barney’s 50 years of service to Publix, our associates, our customers and the communities we serve. His commitment to our culture has helped pave the path for our future successes,” Publix CEO, Todd Jones said. “It has been an honor and privilege to work alongside him. We will miss him but also wish him well as he starts this next chapter of his life.”

Barnett began his career with the retailer in 1969 as an internal auditor, was promoted to controller in 1977, vice president of administration in 1986 and in 1998 moved into his vice chairman role.

In addition, he also has been recognized throughout his career for his leadership and commitment to the community, was named Philanthropist of the Year in 2016 by The United Way of Central Florida, awarded the Alexis de Tocqueville Society award in 2002 and the Governor’s Business Leader award in 2010, the company said.
