Sam’s Club, Walmart's warehouse club division, announced Tuesday that in the spring it will test technology designed to make its popular Scan & Go service faster and easier. The camera in the shopping app will hover over an item, identify the product, and add it to the shopper's list.

"In October, Sam’s Club opened Sam’s Club Now, which is the epicenter of the company’s commitment to continuous innovation. We’ve tested augmented reality, wayfinding and navigation, as well as one-hour Club Pickup. And, we’re pleased to announce that in spring, we’ll be testing technology designed to make our popular Scan & Go service even faster and easier,” Eddie Garcia, vice president, product and member experience said, in a company blog post.

The Scan & Go service was launched two years ago and has become popular, according to Garcia.

"With the upcoming test, we’ll enhance the experience with the launch of a technology using computer vision and machine learning. Rather than having to locate the barcode and scan it just right, the camera in the app will identify the product with a simple hover and add it to the member’s shopping list. It's as simple as that,” he said.

Sam's Club expects to incorporate this same technology into the tools that its associates use. “By making their jobs easier, they're able to spend more time serving members. It's a win-win for everyone,” he said, adding, “Following these tests, we’ll experiment with the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to help manage member shopping lists,” Garcia said.
