Target to roll out new payment options

1/23/2019
Target customers nationwide will have a lot of new ways to electronically make purchases.

Target soon will start allowing customers to complete transactions via the Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay mobile payment apps. In addition, the discount giant will accept contactless cards from Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover. The new payment methods will be available in all 1,850 U.S. Target stores.

“Offering guests more ways to conveniently and quickly pay is just another way we’re making it easier than ever to shop Target,” said Mike McNamara, Target CIO.

Customers who have mobile payment set up in their iPhone, Samsung Galaxy phone or Android phone or wearable devices will be able to hold their device near the card reader at checkout to complete their purchase. Those using contactless credit or debit cards will similarly be able to tap their contactless card on the reader screen to pay.

Target is accepting these new third-party mobile and contactless payment options following the December 2017 introduction of the Wallet feature in the Target app. Target Wallet enables app users to scan their phones to pay with a Target credit or debit card, or redeem coupons, offers and gift cards.

Separately, Apple announced that in addition to Apple Pay coming to Target, the mobile payment service will also soon be accepted at more than 245 Hy-Vee stores in the Midwest and inside the store at all of Speedway’s approximately 3,000 locations across the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast.
