Walgreens brings ItEndsWithUs to NYC for WE Day UN

9/26/2018
Walgreens participated in WE Day UN in New York City on Wednesday by bringing its national ItEndsWithUs opioid abuse and misuse prevention campaign to local students through the event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Slated to speak was Walgreens ambassador Becky Savage, a mother whose two sons died from opioid overdose in the same night.

Savage will discuss Walgreens’ safe medication disposal program, which began in 2016 and has since collected more than 270 tons of medication. Also as part of WE Day UN, attendees were set to hear stories about social issues from young people, including some who have dealt with addiction, as well as about how Walgreens is working to combat the opioid epidemic with the #ItEndsWithUs campaign, which seeks to offer resources and positive steps for youth.

The campaign also features actor Brandon Larracuente from the Netflix shows “13 Reasons Why” and “Bloodline,” who had a close friend die due to opioid addiction, who was set to speak via video message at WE Day UN to introduct the campaign.

“I joined forces with Walgreens because I want to help kids understand the risks of opioids, and encourage families to clean out their medicine cabinet and safely dispose of their unused medications,” Savage said. “In one terrible night in 2015, I lost my sons Jack and Nick to opioid overdose. I’m speaking at WE Day UN to help prevent more tragic deaths like theirs.”
