Walmart expands its roster of grocery delivery providers
When it comes to delivering online grocery orders, Walmart is taking a “more the merrier” approach.
Walmart is adding four new companies to its rapidly growing roster of online grocery delivery providers. Point Pickup, Skipcart, AxleHire and Roadie will help support Walmart’s online grocery deliveries in more than 100 metro areas across four states, with further expansion planned in the coming weeks. Walmart grocery delivery is available in more than 800 stores, with another 800 stores and more than 200 new metro areas being added this year.
The delivery companies will work in tandem with Walmart personal shoppers who pick online orders. After an order has been picked, a driver will retrieve the order from a Walmart store and deliver it to the customer during their specified delivery window.
To use delivery, customers place their orders online or on the existing Walmart grocery app, switch to the Delivery tab, and select a delivery window at checkout.
Groceries can be delivered to customers as soon as the same day. Delivery includes a basic fee structure and $30 minimum order.
“Customers love our grocery delivery service,” said Tom Ward, senior VP of digital operations, Walmart US. “As they are busy managing jobs, soccer practice, dance lessons and social schedules we are on a mission to do more than keep a little extra money in their pockets. With the help of these new delivery partners, we’re making grocery shopping even easier by bringing the everyday low prices of Walmart right to the front door of customers.”
Walmart works with many other partners to get online grocery orders into the hands of consumers. These include on-demand delivery service Postmates, as well as Uber, Deliv, and crowdsourced delivery platform Spark Delivery.
The discount giant is also actively exploring the potential of driverless delivery technology. Earlier this month, Walmart launched a grocery delivery pilot with autonomous vehicle company UDelv in Surprise, Arizona. In November 2018, Walmart partnered with Ford Motor Co. and Postmates to test self-driving vehicles to deliver fresh groceries in Florida’s Miami-Dade County.
Walmart also offers an online grocery pickup service that allows customers to order their groceries online and pick them up in stores without getting out of their cars. The service is now available in 2,100 stores with 1,000 more to be added this year.
