Canadian-based Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw pharmacies have begun delivering their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Toronto-based company announced that its pharmacies throughout Alberta will begin administering the Pfizer vaccine to residents age 75 years old and older.

“Pharmacists are among the most trusted healthcare professionals, providing convenient and accessible community-level health services,” Jeff Leger, president of Shoppers Drug Mart said. “Across Canada, there are more than 10,000 pharmacies, in rural areas and urban centres. Based on the most recent flu season, it is expected that community pharmacies could vaccinate up to 3 million Canadians each week.”

Currently, vaccines are available at more than 40 Loblaw-owned pharmacies in Alberta, with more expecting shipments in the coming week, the company said.
