LAS VEGAS — Cardinal Health’s fourth annual Pharmacy Ownership Boot Camp included a bit of an international flair, as Australian pharmacist Leigh Borovina spoke to the group during the Mix, Mingle & Mocha networking reception on July 25. Borovina traveled from Australia to not only address the reception — the whole day is sponsored by Cardinal Health’s Women in Pharmacy — but also to explore how to establish and develop a Women in Pharmacy group back in her home “Down Under.”
“I feel there is so much we can learn from each other, even though it’s slightly different where I come from,” Borovina said. “There is so much cross-collaborative innovation between our two countries.”
Open to all Cardinal Health RBC attendees — men and women — Cardinal Health RBC’s Pharmacy Ownership Boot Camp is an intensive daylong lesson in how to successfully open and operate a community pharmacy.
“The goal is to help more people realize the dream of independent pharmacy ownership,” Eden Sulzer, director of Cardinal Health’s Women in Pharmacy program, told participants following the morning’s networking opportunity over coffee.
The day included a Paths to Pharmacy Ownership workshop, where Con Lane and Brette McDonald of Medicine Shoppe International, Inc. and Brett Fortier of Cardinal Health Pharmacy Transition Services highlighted the basics of start-ups, acquisitions and franchises.
Other seminars for the Pharmacy Ownership Boot Camp included a financial fitness tip seminar, during which Tom Craft, a private wealth adviser for Independent Pharmacy Consulting Group, addressed how to build personal equity. Mark Pilkington of Cardinal Health provided tips on driving growth through services that identify potentially untapped revenue opportunities. And Mike Bollinger of Live Oak Bank was on hand to discuss what kind of financing is available to entrepreneurs looking to open their own pharmacy.
Cardinal Health RBC’s other Women in Pharmacy events included a booth on the tradeshow floor and a continuing education opportunity addressing the unique security issues of female pharmacy owners
In support of the effort to encourage women pharmacists in pharmacy ownership, Cardinal Health has donated more than $5 million in pharmacy school scholarships to male and female students who aspire to own their own pharmacy, as well as providing mentoring and networking opportunities for learning business development strategies.
