Walgreens completes more than 1M COVID-19 vaccinations

More than 1 million people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 by Walgreens in the month that it has been administering the vaccination. The company said that the vaccines have been administered across long-term care facilities and other vulnerable populations in accordance with state and jurisdiction distribution plans, and that it remains on track to complete administering first COVID-19 doses in skilled nursing facilities by Jan. 25. 

Walgreens began administering the vaccinations on Dec. 21. 

“Thanks to the dedication of tens of thousands of Walgreens pharmacy team members, we have been able to provide 1 million COVID-19 vaccinations to those who need them most in just one month,” said John Standley, president of Walgreens. “This unprecedented effort has not been without challenges, but as federal, state and local jurisdictions continue to advance their prioritization and distribution plans, we have been able to rapidly expand vaccine access to our nation’s most vulnerable populations and help our communities begin to emerge from this pandemic.”

In addition to its efforts at long-term care facilities, Walgreens is providing COVID-19 vaccinations to additional vulnerable populations as determined by states and other jurisdictions. The company noted that because supply is limited and available only to certain groups, the vaccine is available by appointment only at designated Walgreens stores, and not to the general public. During the phase 1 rollout, Walgreens is not providing the vaccinations on a walk-in basis.
