Canadian Walmart shoppers now have access to unlimited, free next-day delivery from stores — for a monthly or annual fee.

Walmart Canada, the Canadian subsidiary of Walmart, is launching a new subscription program called Delivery Pass. Currently available in the province of Ottawa, Delivery Pass offers free next-day delivery of more than 65,000 items, including groceries and general merchandise, at a price of $8.97 monthly or $89 annually.

Customers in Canada now have access to Walmart Canada’s new subscription program, Delivery Pass. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver launches will occur before the program rolls out across Canada later this summer.

Location-eligible Walmart Canada customers can purchase Delivery Pass through the Walmart Canada app. When shopping through the Walmart Canada e-commerce site or app, members can select a delivery time slot and add items to their cart ($35 minimum order before fees and taxes). At checkout, delivery fees will be waived automatically for next-day deliveries and members will have the opportunity to upgrade to same-day or express delivery for a discounted fee.

Benefits of the program include:

  • Unlimited, free next-day delivery or upgrade to same-day or express delivery at a discounted cost.
  • Access to in-store prices on more than 65,000 items, including groceries, toys, clothing, electronics and more.

Walmart Canada says it will continue to enhance the program to provide more features for customers.

“Canadians don’t have to choose between fast, convenient delivery and our everyday low prices. We’re transforming our omnichannel offering to better serve Canadians, aiming to build the most efficient, consistent and affordable way to shop in Canada,” said Laurent Duray, chief e-commerce officer, Walmart Canada. “Delivery Pass is going to be a game-changer for Canadians by giving them the products they need, when and how they want them, at the best prices.”

“Not only will our customers save money when shopping with Walmart Canada, they can now spend less time shopping in-store with groceries and more delivered right to their doors from our stores. We’re unlocking access to unlimited, free next-day delivery on items including groceries, electronics and toys, at a low price they can afford,” said Ignacio Baladron, vice president of omnichannel operations, Walmart Canada. “We’re excited to launch today and already have ambitious plans to evolve the program and unlock new features. Delivery Pass is just getting started!”

Walmart takes Prime competition to Canada

While Walmart has always denied it has made any effort to directly counter the Amazon Prime subscription offering, the fact remains there are many similarities between Prime and Walmart+, the paid membership program it rolled out in September 2020.

Like Delivery Pass, Walmart+ offers unlimited free delivery on orders of $35 or more. It also provides gasoline discounts of up to 5 cents a gallon and access to the chain’s Scan & Go app which allows shoppers to avoid checkout lines by scanning items in the store and checkout using Walmart Pay. The retailer has added many other perks over the years since its introduction.

Walmart+ costs $98 a year, or $12.95 a month, with a 15-day free trial period. Delivery Pass now expands this basic concept to the Canadian market.

Walmart Canada operates a chain of more than 400 stores across Canada, as well as a flagship online store.
