    ZAANDAM, Netherlands — Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold will sell its Slovakian business to Slovakia-based retailer Condorum, Ahold said Thursday.

  • Peapod pickup sites launch at four Pa. Giant-Carlisle stores

    CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., has opened four new pickup sites in Pennsylvania for online grocer and sister company Peapod, the supermarket chain said Tuesday.

    Giant-Carlisle announced the launch of the Giant Pick Up service at stores in Harrisburg, Camp Hill, Montgomeryville and Willow Grove, replacing a previous service at the Willow Grove and Camp Hill stores called Shop from Home. Giant-Carlisle and Peapod are owned by Ahold USA, the U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold.

  • Giant-Landover sells gift cards at 5% discount for full-price resale by non-profit organizations

    LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., has started a new way for non-profit organizations to use its gift cards to raise money.

    Giant-Landover announced the launch of "Ca$h for Causes," whereby non-profits can purchase at least $500 worth of Giant gift cards at a 5% discount and then sell them at face value.

  • Peapod opens Coopersburg, Pa., fulfillment center

    CARLISLE, Pa. — Online grocer Peapod has opened a new fulfillment center that will serve the Philadelphia area.

    The Ahold USA-owned company announced the opening of the center, in Coopersburg, Pa., to serve residents of nearby Bucks County, Pa. Peapod offers its services in the area in conjunction with Giant Food Stores, a Carlisle, Pa.-based supermarket chain also owned by Ahold.

  • Ahold calls on pork suppliers to stop using gestation crates for pregnant sows by 2022

    CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA is encouraging pork suppliers to start using open housing for pregnant sows by 2022, the supermarket retailer said Friday.

    The company, which owns the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle chains, as well as the Peapod online grocery service, said it wanted suppliers to transition from gestation crates to open housing, with the option of using gestation crates during appropriate times to keep sows and piglets healthy and safe.
