Unilever meets its fragrance disclosure timetable

1/22/2019
Unilever has met its goal to improve transparency surrounding the fragrances in more than 1,100 of its beauty and personal care products.

The company on Tuesday announced it had met its goal, announced in February 2017, of listing product-specific fragrance ingredients across 15 brands, down to 0.01% of the product formula, by the end of 2018. In addition to this voluntary move — U.S. regulations only require companies to list “fragrance” as an ingredient on packages — the company is updating its packaging labels in the United States to list fragrance allergens according to the European Union’s labeling requirements.

“We are more committed than ever to transparency and building trust in Unilever and our brands,” said Amanda Sourry, president of Unilever North America. “With the completion of our fragrance disclosure initiative, people now have access to more detailed ingredient information for the products they use and love from Unilever. We are very happy to see that other companies in the industry have announced plans to disclose fragrance ingredients in the future.”

To see product-specific fragrance listings, consumers can use the SmartLabel platform and scan a products barcode with SmartLabel’s app. The information also will be available on brand websites. With SmartLabel, Unilever said shoppers also can see explanations for each ingredient and its properties, including what scent it imparts.

Unilever said new products’ fragrance listings would be added “in due course.”
