  • BD appoints Christopher Reidy as CFO

    FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Medical products manufacturer Becton, Dickinson and Co. has appointed Christopher Reidy as its CFO, the company, more commonly known as BD, said Monday.

    BD said Reidy, who will also assume the position of EVP administration on July 15, will report to chairman, CEO and president Vincent Forlenza. Reidy replaces Suketu Upadhyay, who has served as acting CFO since November 2012. Upadhyay will become SVP finance, also effective July 15.

  • Federal court rules in favor of Mylan in asthma, COPD drug dispute with Sunovion

    PITTSBURGH – A chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma drug made by Sunovion infringes Mylan's patents on a similar drug, a federal judge has ruled, Mylan said Monday.

    The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that Sunovion's Brovana (arformoterol tartrate) infringes five patents related to Perforomist (formoterol fumarate), made by Mylan Specialty, the drug maker's branded products division.

  • FDA issues fentanyl patch disposal guidelines

    NEW YORK — Nearly 30 children have been accidentally poisoned by opioid painkiller patches since 1997, according to the Food and Drug Administration, prompting the agency to issue disposal guidelines.

    The FDA listed the guidelines on its website, saying that unused fentanyl patches should be stored out of the reach and sight of children, while used patches should be folded, sticky sides together, and flushed down the toilet.

  • AMA adopts resolution on pharmacist drug inquiries

    NEW YORK — Inquiries by pharmacists with doctors regarding the rationale behind prescriptions, diagnoses and treatment plans are inappropriate, according to a new resolution by the American Medical Association.

    The AMA adopted the resolution at its 2013 annual meeting, calling such inquiries "an interference with the practice of medicine and unwarranted."

  • AbbVie hires style expert Stacy London in psoriasis campaign

    NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. — Drug maker AbbVie has hired the co-host of TLC's "What Not to Wear" to promote a new psoriasis marketing campaign, the company said Monday.

    AbbVie announced that Stacy London, who has lived with psoriasis since the age of 4, would be featured in "Uncover Your Confidence," which offers educational resources and style advice for the estimated 7.5 million Americans who have the disease.

  • Deaths from opioid painkiller overdoses increased by 400% among women between 1999 and 2010, CDC says

    NEW YORK — A dramatic increase in the number of women dying from opioid painkiller overdoses has health officials alarmed.

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday results of an analysis showing that nearly 48,000 women died of prescription painkiller overdoses between 1999 and 2010, with the rate of women dying this way in 2010 increasing more than five-fold during that time. The number of men who died from prescription painkiller overdoses in 2010 increased by 265% over 1999.

  • Onco360 joins limited-distribution network for Tarceva

    NEW YORK — A cancer drug made by Genentech and Astellas is no longer available through ordinary retail channels and is now available only through a limited-distribution network.

    Cancer-focused specialty pharmacy Onco360 said that effective Monday, the drug Tarceva (erlotinib) would no longer be available through retail pharmacies and that had joined a limited-distribution network that the drug makers had set up for the drug. Tarceva is used for treating advanced non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer.
