    RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new product for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease made by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, the drug maker said.

  • Merck's Juvisync approved for Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug that it called the first single-pill combination treatment for Type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

    The FDA approved Merck's Juvisync (sitagliptin and simvastatin), manufactured by Merck subsidiary MSD International GmbH Clonmel Co., based in Tipperary, Ireland. Merck operates under the name MSD outside the United States and Canada in order to avoid confusion with Germany-based Merck KGaA.

  • Lilly's Cialis approved for benign prostatic hyperplasia

    INDIANAPOLIS — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new use for a drug made by Eli Lilly for erectile dysfunction, Lilly said Friday.

    The FDA approved Cialis (tadalafil) as a once-daily treatment for men with erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as BPH, as well as for BPH alone. BPH is a condition in which the prostate enlarges, which can cause urinary symptoms.

  • Merck chairman announces retirement

    WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — Merck chairman Richard Clark is retiring, the company said Thursday.

    Merck announced that Clark, who remained chairman of the company after stepping down as president and CEO in 2010, would retire from the company and its board of directors as of Dec. 1. Kenneth Frazier took over as president and CEO in January 2011, and the board has elected him to serve as chairman following Clark's departure.

  • Harris Teeter to host grand reopening featuring flu shots, health screenings

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Harris Teeter on Oct. 8 and 9 will host a grand reopening celebration featuring a free sampling event at its Norfolk, Va., Harris Teeter, the grocer announced Thursday.

    As part of the events, Harris Teeter will host a flu shot clinic at the pharmacy throughout the weekend. Free health screenings also will be conducted from 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. Shoppers can receive blood-glucose testing, biometric measurement and a health risk assessment.

  • Study: Too much TV may be an indicator of poor blood-glucose control

    ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Type 1 diabetics who watch the most television have poorer blood-sugar control on average, according to a study published online Sept. 16 by the American Diabetes Association's journal Diabetes Care.

    In the cross-sectional study, self-report questionnaires were used to assess media consumption habits, physical activity and socioeconomic status in 296 children, adolescents and young adults with Type 1 diabetes.
