    WASHINGTON — Approximately 13% of smokers do not disclose their tobacco habit to their healthcare provider, according to a recent survey released by the American Legacy Foundation. And while a majority of smokers did admit their smoking status, only some 25% sought help from their doctors or healthcare providers during their last attempt to quit. 


  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Diabetes prevention, management can be aided by healthy diet, regular exercise

    CHICAGO — The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is reminding consumers that the first-line defenses against Type 2 diabetes are a healthy diet and regular exercise, and that these defenses can be aided with the help of a registered dietitian.

    The organization issued a press release following the announcement that celebrity chef Paula Deen had Type 2 diabetes and was working with Novo Nordisk to shed light on the issue.

    LOS ANGELES — A new series of fitness DVDs that promotes long and lean muscle development has made its debut.

    Ballet Body Signature Series, developed by fitness expert Leah Sarago, is a three-part DVD series focuses on the lower body, upper body and core, while incorporating Sarago's elongation technique that combines dance, ballet, Pilates and yoga-inspired exercises. The technique challenges the body through isometrics, stretch-contract reflex and eccentric contractions to create the elongation in the muscles.

  • Identigene: Resolving paternity questions a growing New Year's resolution

    SALT LAKE CITY — According to a survey released by Identigene last week, more than half of adults with paternity questions have resolved to address their question in 2012. Men with paternity questions are twice as likely (51%) than women (25%) to address paternity in 2012.

    Overall, as many as 11% of adults have reported they have personally been in a situation where a paternity test was appropriate; and nearly 1-in-5 (18%) said that they or a close friend or family member have questioned paternity.
