  • Lupin launches its Acticlate generic

    BALTIMORE — Lupin has introduced its generic of Acticlate (doxycycline hyclate) tablets. The drug is indicated to treat and prevent various infections and as an adjunctive severe acne treatment.

    Lupin’s generic will be available in 75- and 150-mg dosage strengths. The product had U.S. sales of $263 million for the 12 months ended June 2017, according to QuintilesIMS data.

     

  • Poll: Majority of Ontario patients trust pharmacists with MMJ dispensing

    TORONTO, Ontario — A new poll commissioned by the Ontario Pharmacists Association has found that patients in the province would trust their pharmacist to dispense medical marijuana. The poll, which comes as the OPA pushes for regulatory changes that would allow pharmacists to dispense medical cannabis, found that 70% of patients think pharmacists should be involved in doing so.

  • CVS Health offers hepatitis A vaccine amid Florida county uptick

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — As Florida’s Broward County sees an uptick in hepatitis A cases, CVS Health is encouraging patients in the area to get vaccinated. So far this year, the county has seen 34 cases of hepatitis A — an increase over the typical seven cases annually, according to the Florida Department of Health.

    CVS Health said its 10 MinuteClinic locations in Broward County are stocked with the hepatitis A vaccine, and the vaccine is available at its 76 CVS Pharmacy locations in the county on a walk-in basis.

  • AstraZeneca gets FDA nod for Calquence

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new lymphoma treatment from AstraZeneca. The company announced this week that its Calquence (acalabrutinib) had been approved to treat patients with mantle cell lymphoma in patients who have received at least one prior therapy.

    BETHESDA, Md. — For the more than 30 million people in the U.S. with diabetes, the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases division of the National Institutes of Health urged people to eat better as part of a best practice in taking care of their condition.

  • CMP Pharma launches CaroSpir oral suspension

    FARMVILLE, N.C. — Following its August approval, CMP Pharma on Monday launched its CaroSpir, a spironolactone oral suspension. Company leadership said CaroSpir is the first approved oral liquid dosage form of the diuretic.

    The formulation is aimed at meeting the needs of patients with difficulty swallowing. Up to this point, CMP Pharma said these patients have relied on compounded formulations with limited shelf life and potential unreimbursed costs.

  • Giant Food partners with higi on diabetes prevention program

    LANDOVER, Md. — Ahold's Giant Food on Monday announced the deployment of a National Diabetes Prevention Program, PreventT2, utilizing in-store nutritionists as lifestyle coaches to help prevent type 2 diabetes diagnoses across the patients they serve. Groups of participants are learning the skills they need to make lasting changes such as eating better, losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active and managing stress, the grocer noted.

  • Opioid commission issues 56 policy suggestions in final report

    WASHINGTON — The President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis has issued its final report with 56 recommendations on how to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. The report, issued at the commission’s final meeting Wednesday, includes such recommendations as providing federal funding and programs to target opioid abuse and misuses, addiction prevention efforts and prescription drug management program enhancements, among others.
