  • GE donates $1.1 million to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

     FAIRFIELD, Conn. — In response to Hurricane Sandy, GE on Monday gave $1.1 million to support relief and recovery efforts throughout the Northeast of the United States. The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund was the recipient of $1 million, GE reported. The additional $100,000 dollars was given to the United Way of America for them to direct to local communities.

  • Kmart, Sears distribute emergency items, provide loyalty-card points to storm-affected areas

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears and Kmart are offering more than a quarter-million dollars in rewards for members of their loyalty program and sending emergency equipment from 42 distribution centers in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, parent company Sears Holdings said.

  • Walgreens to host 'Senior Discount Day' with savings of up to 20% on store brand items

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Wednesday announced that this Friday Nov. 2 the chain will host its first Senior Discount Day. All senior citizens over the age of 55 will receive 15% off eligible store items and 20% off eligible Walgreens, W Brand and Nice! products. 

    Participants who simply reference the discount and present a valid ID, will receive the discount at any Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstore nationwide.

    BETHEL, Conn. — Procter & Gamble battery brand Duracell is assisting with post-Sandy relief efforts by bringing a little power to, coincidentally, Battery Park in New York.

  • Meijer offers toy discounts for holiday season

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Meijer is offering discounts on more than 400 toys at stores and online in anticipation of the holiday season as many customers are likely to want to keep prices down, the Midwestern mass-merchandise chain said Thursday.

    The chain also plans to release a holiday gift guide that includes 18 pages of toys and an online release of its list of its top 25 toys. The toy discounts include toys in “virtually every” category, ranging from action figures to educational toys.

  • Canadian retailers lose C$10.8 million per day to shrink

    TORONTO — Shrink costs Canadian retailers almost C$4 billion per year, according to a new report.

    The report, released Wednesday by PwC and the Retail Council of Canada and based on a survey of 34 retailers from across Canada, estimated that retailers in Canada lose about C$10.8 million per shopping day to theft by customers and employees, counting mistakes and organized crime. Cosmetics and fragrances, alcohol and women's clothing were the three most popular items to steal, according to the report.

  • Clorox COO to retire; two SVPs to transition to EVP-COO roles

    OAKLAND, Calif. – The Clorox Co. on Tuesday announced that COO Lawrence S. "Larry" Peiros, 57, will retire from the company effective April 1, 2013.

    Peiros, who joined Clorox in 1980 as a summer intern, was appointed a member of the company's executive committee in 1999 and then to the COO role in 2007. He also oversees the marketing, sales, research & development and product supply functions as well as Clorox's Eco office.
