  • NAD refers company making unsubstantiated disease-state claims to FTC

    NEW YORK — The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus on Monday referred advertising for Serranol dietary supplement, marketed by Good Health Naturally, to the Federal Trade Commission for further review after the company declined to fully participate in a National Advertising Division review of its advertising claims.

  • GNC introduces app for Android, iPhone

    PITTSBURGH — GNC has introduced a new, free mobile application for Android and iPhone devices.

    Designed to extend the store experience, GNC said its app, which first debuted last March for iPhone devices, includes such new features as:

    ST. LOUIS — An intranasal vaccine that includes four weakened strains of influenza could do a better job in protecting children from the flu than current vaccines, research released Tuesday by St. Louis University found.

  • Latest Carmex art project: '365 Days of Lip Service'

    MILWAUKEE — Carma Labs earlier this year teamed with mixed media artist Lisa Pavelka to launch 365 Days of Lip Service, a collection of artwork created on the lids of 366 Carmex lip balm jars.

    FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. — McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the maker of Zyrtec, on Wednesday announced that actress Kate Walsh and beauty expert Rebekah George will address "allergy face" — the beauty challenges that can come along with typical allergy symptoms — during a live webcast April 10 at 8 p.m. EST on Ustream, a live interactive broadcast platform.

  • CDC's stop smoking ad campaign results in a sharp spike in quit attempts

    ATLANTA — Sales of smoking-cessation products may realize a March boom following a recent government advertising campaign that encourages Americans to quit smoking.

    One week following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's launch of its Tips from Former Smokers campaign, calls to the 1-800-QUIT-NOW quitline were up 130.4%, the agency reported Monday. Calls were up an additional 3.5% in the subsequent week.

    A record 34,413 calls were fielded between March 26 and April 1, the CDC reported.

  • Americans buying supplements even as they tighten their belts

    WASHINGTON — More than two-thirds of Americans (71%) reported the economy has not affected their household’s purchasing habits of dietary supplements, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Council for Responsible Nutrition.
