  • Women with diabetes may suffer from low sex drive, study finds

    CARY, N.C. — Almost half of women in the United States who suffer from diabetes reported that it has a negative impact on their sex lives, according to a new study released Tuesday by MicroMass Communications.

    The research, which highlighted the need for improved education and support to help women build confidence in their ability to overcome the challenges of the disease, was conducted with a representative sample of more than 800 women with diabetes.

  • Graymark sets its sights on sleep disorders

    OKLAHOMA CITY — Following the sale of ApothecaryRx pharmacies to Walgreens, Graymark Healthcare said it is shifting its focus to sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea.

    Graymark is one of the largest providers of sleep medicine diagnosis and treatment, owning and operating diagnostic sleep centers that treat a wide range of sleep disorders, and also operates a medical equipment supply company that provides disposable and durable medical equipment.

  • Chinese retailer eyes GNC

    PITTSBURGH — Chinese retailer Bright Food Group is looking to potentially grow its portfolio with the acquisition of specialty retailer GNC, according to several reports.

    The Bright Food Group acquisition would be backed by Hony Capital, one of China’s biggest buyout firms. What's more, the global buyout firm the Blackstone Group is expected to join Hony in backing Bright Food Group’s potential GNC bid, published reports have noted.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids have antidepressant properties, study finds

    MIAMI — The American College of Neuropsychopharmacology on Wednesday presented a new analysis of the effects of omega-3 essential fatty acids as potential treatment options for depression.

    Two critical omega-3 essential fatty acids available from certain food or nutritional supplements but not manufactured by the body — eicosapentenoic acid and docosahexaenoic — play a role in optimal brain functioning and have antidepressant benefits that have not been fully recognized, the professional society stated during its annual meeting in Miami.

  • FDA panel backs Contrave

    SAN DIEGO — A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee has recommended approval for an investigational diet pill.

    Orexigen Therapeutics and Takeda Pharmaceutical announced Tuesday that the FDA Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 13-7 that clinical trial data demonstrated that the benefits of the drug Contrave (naltrexone and bupropion) outweighed its risk and supported approval. The committee also voted 11-8 to recommend a study to examine Contrave’s effect on risk for cardiac disease.
