  • NPAC advocates separation of medical and recreational cannabis

    TORONTO  — The Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada on Tuesday applauded the federal government's Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation for recognizing the need to preserve the system of medical cannabis separate from the recreational system.

    In its report released yesterday, the Task Force clearly noted Neighbourhood Pharmacies' proposition that medical cannabis is a serious drug and that Canadians expect that strength and packaging standards applied to prescription medications be applied to cannabis.

  • Obama signs 21st Century Cures Act
    WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed the 21st Century Cures Act into law in a ceremony at the White House, where he introduced by Vice President Joe Biden. The act, one of the last the outgoing president is expected to sign, will invest more than $6 billion over seven years to provide funding for various initiatives, including fighting prescription drug abuse, expanding the president’s Precision Medication Initiative and funding the “cancer moonshot,” aimed at finding new and better treatments for cancer. 
     

  • NACDS adds to its government affairs team

    ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores added to its government affairs team with the hires of William Tighe as vice president of federal government affairs and Amber Manko as director of federal government affairs. Tighe reports to Tom O’Donnell, NACDS’ senior vice president of government affairs and public policy. He began his new position with NACDS on Dec. 12. Manko started with NACDS on Nov. 28 and reports to Tighe.

  • GNC absolved of wrongdoing in case against USPLabs

    PITTSBURGH — As part of an agreement with the Department of Justice in connection with that agency's investigation into USPLabs, GNC Holdings has been absolved of knowingly selling products in violation of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the specialty channel retailer announced Wednesday.

  • NCPA warns against challenges associated with Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016

    ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The National Community Pharmacists Association recently submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding the implementation of Sec. 704 (also known as the pharmacy “lock-in” provision) in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016, the association announced Tuesday. According to NCPA, at-risk Medicare Part D beneficiaries are the target of this initiative trying to stem the rise of opioid abuse.

  • FDA to make hearing aids available OTC

    SILVER SPRING, Md. -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday announced its commitment to considering a category of over-the-counter hearing aids that could deliver new, innovative and lower-cost products to millions of consumers.

    In addition, the agency issued a guidance document explaining that it does not intend to enforce the requirement that individuals 18 and up receive a medical evaluation or sign a waiver prior to purchasing most hearing aids.

  • 21st Century Cures Act passes Senate, heads to Obama’s desk
    WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 94-5 on Wednesday to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, sending it to the desk of President Barack Obama. The act, which was passed by the House of Representatives on Nov. 30, includes funding to support the fight against prescription drug abuse and funding for the National Institutes of Health’s cancer initiative, known as Vice President Joe Biden’s “cancer moonshot” initiative, which was renamed by the Senate after Biden’s son, Beau, who died of cancer in 2015.
