  • Albertsons names Mayes SVP external affairs, chief diversity officer

    BOISE, Idaho — Albertsons on Friday appointed Jonathan Mayes to the post of SVP external affairs and chief diversity officer. In his new role, he will head up the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts, as well as its government relationships, philanthropy and sustainability departments.

  • Weis Markets generates Q4 same-store sales growth of 3.4%

    SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday posted a fourth-quarter sales increase of 17.6% to $925.1 million, adjusted for the extra week in 2016, driven by comparable-store sales gains of 3.4% for the 14-week period ended Dec. 31.

    For the year, the company's sales increased 9% to $3.1 billion. Year-to-date net income increased 46.9% to $87.2 million, while earnings per share increased 46.6 percent to $3.24 compared to $2.21 in 2015. Year-to-date operating income increased 8.3% to $98.3 million.

  • Walgreens Boots Alliance fills chief marketing, chief merchandising positions

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens Boots Alliance on Friday named two executives to the chief marketing officer and chief merchandising officer positions, promoting Adam Holyk and Joe Hartsig, respectively, to those roles.

    Both will assume their new roles as of April 1 and report to Alex Gourlay, co-COO for Walgreens Boots Alliance.

    NEW YORK — WestLab earlier this week announced the launch of its first dedicated beauty collection, Supersalt, exclusively through Walgreens on March 17. The Supersalt collection, comprised of three essential-oil infused bathing salts, is fortified with blends of organic plant and fruit extracts, oils, antioxidants and minerals.

  • Kmart garners top ranking on pharmacy customer satisfaction index

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Kmart earned the top ranking — a score of 84 out of a possible 100 — in the health and wellness/pharmacy category in the recently released American Customer Satisfaction Index “Retail Report 2016.” Kmart’s ranking rose from a score of 76 the prior year, good for a 10.5% year-over-year increase.

  • Ulta’s Q4, full-year earnings lay groundwork for continued store growth

    BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Ulta Beauty on Thursday reported a stellar fourth quarter that shows why many consider it one of the hottest retailers in the United States.  

    The beauty products retailer also said it would open approximately 100 net new stores in 2017, and remodel 13 locations.   
        
    Ulta Beauty’s net income for the quarter, ended Jan. 30, surged 30% to a better-than-expected $140.2 million, from $107.8 million in the year-ago period.

  • NCPA calls for Congressional hearings on DIR practice

    ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The National Community Pharmacists Association on Friday requested Congressional hearings on legislation, the Improving Transparency and Accuracy in Medicare Part D Spending Act (S. 413 and H.R. 1038), that would stop the practice of pharmacy direct and indirect remuneration fees being applied retroactively under Medicare Part D.

  • CVS to dispense naloxone prescription-free in four more states

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Pharmacy added Arizona, Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina to the list of stated where it now dispenses the opioid overdoes reversal drug naloxone to patients without a prescription. CVS Pharmacy locations in 41 states are now able to increase access to this medication.
