  • Costco, UPS team up with University of Washington on omnichannel project

    SEATTLE -- The University of Washington is teaming up with Costco, UPS, Nordstrom and other stakeholders on a new project that aims to improve the way consumers receive their online purchases.

    The SCTL Center Urban Freight Lab says it will be working to improve the management of both public and private operations of urban goods delivery systems. Urban Freight Lab members plan to engage in strategic applied research projects at the SCTL Center, and help identify priority problems for future research.

    SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion on Tuesday announced that it would be unveiling a new shopping experience for its customers at 142 stores in the greater Charlotte area on Oct. 12. The company said it has invested $215 million this year to remodel stores, lower prices, hire hundreds of new associates and give back to local communities.

  • Walgreens, Kroger employees awarded NRF scholarships

    WASHINGTON -- Retail employees of Walgreens and Kroger are among the winners of the National Retail Federation's fourth annual Dream BIG Scholarship for 2016.

    The 20 recipients of the 2016 Dream BIG Scholarships were selected out of hundreds of applicants from more than 90 retailers across the country. The winners will soon be able to pursue a master’s or undergraduate degree at the University of Phoenix through the university’s collaboration with NRF to provide each recipient with a full-tuition scholarship.

  • Safeway to open weight loss clinics in 5 Bay Area stores

    SAN FRANCISCO — Weight loss clinics will soon be coming to several Bay Area Safeway stores. Safeway, alongside Costa Mesa, Calif.-based weight loss clinic chain Lean for Life By Lindora Clinic, announced Friday that Lean for Life by Lindora Clinics will be opening on Oct. 10 at five Safeway stores in Danville, Dublin, Livermore, Menlo Park and San Jose.

  • Report: A shutdown of Kmart or Sears is complicated

    It won't be simple for Sears or Kmart to shutdown, as the country's malls and strip centers littered with at least 2,500 empty storefronts, Crain's reports.

    According to Crain's, it will take years to find buyers for all the real estate Sears owns and leases -- especially at a time when department stores and other retailers are looking to shrink their footprint, not grow it.
