  • New Rite Aid group VP pharmacy initiatives and clinical services to oversee Wellness Ambassador program

    CAMP HILL, Pa. – Rite Aid has promoted Karen Staniforth, VP pharmacy for the chain's mid-Atlantic division, to group VP pharmacy initiatives and clinical services, the company said Monday.

  • Family Dollar supply chain executive resigns from post

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores last week announced that Jeffrey Macak, EVP supply chain, has resigned from the company for personal reasons, effective Nov. 27. 

    The dollar store operator intends to conduct a search for Macak’s replacement.

    Macak had been named to the post in September. He had come from Bed Bath & Beyond, where he served as VP global supply chain for 13 years. 

     

     

  • Safeway sells 11 Chicago stores to Roundy's

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Monday announced it has reached a definitive agreement to sell 11 of its Dominick's stores in the Chicago metropolitan area in a cash and lease assumption transaction to Roundy's. Roundy's will take possession of the stores during a transition period that will take place over the next two months.

    The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. 

  • Dollar General refutes U.S. PIRG Education Fund report that high-lead toy set was sold in its stores

    GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General before the Thanksgiving holiday refuted a recent U.S. PIRG Education Fund study — Trouble in Toyland 2013 — which suggested a toy jewelry ring set that tested twice the legal limit for lead was sold at Dollar General stores. 

    "This product is not currently, nor has ever been, sold in Dollar General stores," the dollar store operator said.

    Canada's Jean Coutu Group is helping to bolster holiday sales with the launch of its "e-store window" inside the Longueuil Metro Station. Commuters will be able to shop a wall of deals using their smartphones with delivery before Dec. 24. 

  • Consumers shift shopping patterns on Cyber Monday

    WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Consumers show unique online shopping patterns on Cyber Monday. According to figures released by integrated online marketing company ValueClick, while most online shopping activity occurs between 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. local time on a typical weekday, the heaviest volume shifts to 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time on Cyber Monday, peaking at 8 p.m.

  • Personalized service from store attendants grows in importance for pharmacy retailers

    Rite Aid announced Monday the promotion of Karen Staniforth to group VP pharmacy initiatives and clinical services from her current position of VP pharmacy for the chain's mid-Atlantic division. In her new position, Staniforth will oversee the company's strategy around the Wellness Ambassadors, specially trained staff who walk the aisles of the stores and provide information on health and wellness products and programs, as well as serve as a "bridge" between the front end and the pharmacy.

  • CVS Caremark to acquire Coram infusion business for $2.1B

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark is looking to bolster its specialty pharmacy offerings by acquiring Coram, the specialty infusion services and enteral nutrition business unit of Apria Healthcare Group for approximately $2.1 billion.
     
    Coram provides infusion therapies and nutrition services to more than 20,000 patients each month. Coram cares for patients primarily through home infusion as well as a national network of more than 85 locations, including more than 65 ambulatory infusion suites.
