  • Safeway reaffirms commitment to National Guard employees

    ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Safeway chairman and CEO Steve Burd on Monday signed a Statement of Support for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense agency, at a ceremony at the company's corporate offices in Pleasanton, Calif., ESGR stated. 

    "We are honored to reaffirm Safeway's support for our employees in the National Guard and Reserve," Burd said. "No other public service could be more important than providing support to our men and women in uniform."

  • Giant-Landover donates 1,000 turkeys to local food bank

    LANDOVER, Md. — Giant-Landover donated 1,000 turkeys to a nearby food bank last week to help families in need enjoy Thanksgiving, the Ahold-owned chain said.

    The chain, officially known as Giant Food and based in Landover, Md., sent President Anthony Hucker and VP Finance Brian Shelton to the Capital Area Food Bank to present 1,000 turkeys on Friday. Shelton is also a board member of the food bank.

  • Duane Reade kicks off Facebook campaign to promote store-brand hosiery

    NEW YORK — Duane Reade, which is owned by Walgreens, has announced a seven-week social media campaign to raise awareness of Duane Reade-brand hosiery products — produced by Doris Hosiery Mills.

    The campaign will aim to help New Yorkers find the perfect legwear for a multitude of events in time for the winter season. The "Show Us Some Leg" contest, calls for entrants to upload their original photos wearing Duane Reade brand hosiery via a Duane Reade Facebook page application, commenced at midnight on Nov. 18 and will run through Jan. 7.

    Since the campaign's inception, CVS/pharmacy and its customers have raised more than $31 million to support St. Jude.
