  • Ahold reports positive Q4, full-year results

    AMSTERDAM — Ahold experienced several bright spots during its fourth quarter and full year, the Dutch supermarket company said.

    Fourth-quarter net sales totaled $9.4 billion, a 4.5% increase above the year-ago period, while net sales for the year increased by 2.5% to $39.1 billion.

  • Walgreens unveils newly renovated stores in Indianapolis

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has transformed 68 locations in the Indianapolis market into health and daily living destinations.

    The drug store chain hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at a store located on 16th and Meridian in Indianapolis. On hand at the ceremony were Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson, former Indianpolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.

    The stores are part of Walgreens' pilot program that launched last year in Chicago.

  • Shoppers expands Nutrition iQ

    BOWIE, Md. — Shoppers Food and Pharmacy, a Supervalu banner, is encouraging consumers to eat healthy by expanding its in-store nutritional navigation program.

    Shoppers said that Nutrition iQ now will include the fresh food department, robust nutrition information for the center store, including additional signage, nutritional attributes and health benefit information, to help consumers identify better-for-you foods.

  • Rite Aid presents $15,000 check to Tuesday's Children

    NEW YORK — A charity for 9/11 victims and their families and victims of terrorism worldwide got a big check from retail pharmacy chain Rite Aid at an event in New York's Grand Central Terminal Wednesday morning.

    Rite Aid presented a $15,000 check to Tuesday's Children at its store in the train station, with Rite Aid regional VP Paul Perinetti and Tuesday's Children executive director Terry Sears in attendance. The money came from a two-day event in October in which the retailer delivered flu shots to commuters at the station.

  • Analysts provide outlook for 2012

    NEW YORK — A wide range of factors and "moving parts" will likely make 2012 a challenging year for pharmacy retailers as the economy, generic drugs and the dispute between Walgreens and Express Scripts figure prominently, analysts say.

    Still, they say, various factors may serve to benefit drug stores and other retailers that operate pharmacies.

  • Target holds off sale of credit card business

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced that it has temporarily suspended its efforts to sell its credit card receivables portfolio. The company said it remains committed to selling the portfolio on appropriate terms, but based on discussions with potential partners the company has determined that it is not in its best interests to finalize a transaction at this time.
