    WASHINGTON — In an effort to assure customers that private-label products are meeting the proper nutrition criteria, Walmart announced it is implementing a transparent initiative called "Great For You," an icon that calls out healthy foods sold in Walmart stores, Walmart announced on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

  • CVS Caremark Charitable Trust 'surprises' nonprofits with $4.3M in funding

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Representatives of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, a private foundation created by CVS Caremark, kicked off a "Day of Giving" on Tuesday by surprising several nonprofits with the grant funding they had requested.

    The visits, hosted by several of the company's executives, were timed to coincide with the announcement that $4.3 million has been awarded in grants to 98 nonprofit organizations across the country in 2011, which includes multiyear grants from previous years.

  • Supervalu announces work force reduction

    MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Tuesday announced plans to reduce its national work force by an estimated 800 positions. A majority of these reductions will take place by the close of the company’s fiscal year on Feb. 25, 2012. The reductions include both current positions and open jobs that will not be filled.

  • Walgreens takes its lumps and moves on

    Apparently, there’s life after Express Scripts.

    Walgreens took its lumps in January after failing to mend its very public rift with pharmacy benefit management giant Express Scripts, reporting a 2.3% drop in sales for the month. But considering that the PBM’s millions of customers represented $5.3 billion in prescription sales for the 7,818-store drug chain in fiscal 2011, it could have been worse.

  • Judge grants Cardinal Health temporary restraining order against DEA

    DUBLIN, Ohio — Cardinal Health was granted a temporary restraining order Friday against the Drug Enforcement Administration's suspension order of its Lakeland, Fla., distribution center.

    A preliminary injunction hearing is currently scheduled for Feb. 13.

  • Walmart backs commitment to health with $9.5 million

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is following through on its commitment to give consumers the best access to affordable, nutritious foods by donating $9.5 million in grants to organizations with a shared mission of promoting healthy eating habits.

    The funding will support nutrition education programs, provide classes focused on learning to cook and shop for healthier foods on a budget and provide live cooking demonstrations in communities nationwide, the company annnounced in a press release.

  • Sam's Club gets down to heart of the matter with free screenings

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — In honor of American Heart Month, Sam's Club announced it will be hosting free heart health screenings on Feb. 11 at all locations with a pharmacy.

    From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., members and guests can receive total cholesterol, HDL, glucose, body mass index and blood-pressure tests for free. During the screenings, Sam's Club pharmacies also will offer free samples of related items, the company said.

  • Giant-Landover acquires two stores in Baltimore area

    LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food has acquired two supermarkets in the Baltimore area from another company, Giant said.

    Giant, also known as Giant-Landover to distinguish itself from Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa. — both are owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold — said it would buy two Fresh & Green's stores from Mrs. Green's Management. The stores are in Baltimore and Parkville, Md.

    Both stores will subsequently be closed for remodeling, and the Baltimore store will replace a Giant store at a nearby shopping center.
