  • Full speed ahead: Retailers find color cosmetics, skin care and bubble bath alluring

    Mass market doors might not be the prime destination for all beauty products, but there are market wedges the channel dominates. An example is color cosmetics, where brows and lashes are leading the charge to attract shoppers. Bath sales are also bubbling again as drug stores wrest customers away from mall-based specialty stores, while also nabbing licensed hits that score big with parents. IRI tracked double-digit increases in the category over the past year.

  • Jet.com tries brick-and-mortar at Story in Manhattan

    NEW YORK — Story, the innovative store in Manhattan that totally reinvents itself every six to eight weeks, has a new theme and this time Walmart is in on the act.

    On May 10, Story unveiled its latest iteration, “Fresh,” which is being done in collaboration with Walmart’s Jet.com division. Here is how Story described its new theme:

  • Walmart potentially developing its answer to Amazon Dash buttons

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Amazon’s signature Dash button may be getting some competition from a rival very soon.
     
    A patent filing by Walmart reveals that the retail giant could be developing an Internet of Things-based device that tracks how shoppers use products in their homes and then electronically reorders merchandise.
     
  • Former Walmart exec joins Ecoark board

    ROGERS, Ark. — Holding company Ecoark on Thursday announced the addition of two members to its board of directors. Joining the board is Steve Nelson, a former VP, controller of Dillard’s, and Susan Chambers, who retired from her position as Walmart’s chief human resources officer in July 2015.
     
  • Walmart makes money transfers more affordable

    Walmart is making its cheaper and faster for its customers to send money.
     
    The retailer is adding new “rollback” fees to its Walmart2Walmart money transfer program. The new fees, beginning Wednesday, April 26, save customers between 20% and 90% on cash transfers versus the leading competitor, according to Walmart.  For example, shoppers sending $250 will pay $8 through the new program, compared to fees that could range between $12.50 and $24 on Western Union, the retailer reported.
     
  • Walmart’s tech incubator names CEO

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart’s technology incubator, Store No. 8, hired Jennifer Fleiss as its CEO, according to several media reports.

    Fleiss is a co-founder of Rent the Runway, stepped down from the online clothing-rental service earlier this year. At Walmart, she will lead Code Eight, which will develop “highly personalized, one-to-one shopping experiences,” according to a statement.

  • Dallas to host next 100,000 Opportunities Initiative

    DALLAS – A national coalition of more than 50 leading U.S. companies known as the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative will come together on May 19 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center to host the Dallas Opportunity Fair –  an unprecedented, day-long hiring event aimed at 16-24 year olds who are not in school and unemployed.
