  • Ahold to acquire Spar in Czech Republic

    ZAANDAM, the Netherlands — Ahold has entered into an agreement to acquire Spar's business in the Czech Republic. The acquisition includes 50 stores of which 36 are compact hypers and 14 are supermarkets.

    The acquisition, which has and enterprise value of CZK 5,245 million, will be funded from existing cash resources and is subject to merger clearance.

    CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA on Friday announced that Rick Herring, president of the Giant Carlisle Division, has made the decision to retire, effective Feb. 14.

    Herring has had a successful career at Ahold companies for nearly 25 years and has made many contributions to the Ahold organization.

  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia recognizes Giant Food Stores for $5 million leadership gift

    PHILADELPHIA — The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on Friday hosted an event to announce a $5 million leadership gift from Giant Food Stores to support construction of the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, an outpatient facility scheduled to open in the University City section of Philadelphia in 2015. Giant Food Stores’ contribution punctuates nearly 20 years of philanthropic support for patient care programs at Children’s Hospital. In recognition of Giant Food Stores’ gift, the lobby of the Buerger Center will be named the Giant Lobby.

  • Ahold shareholders approve reverse stock split

    ZAANDAM, the Netherlands — Ahold's shareholders on Tuesday approved the company's proposal to return €1 billion (US$1.4 billion) to shareholders by way of a capital repayment and reverse stock split.

     Shareholders voted at an extraordinary general meeting held at Ahold's headquarters. The meeting was attended by 65 shareholders, representing approximately 657 million votes.
