    PHILADELPHIA — Medication nonadherence is common, but it may be reduced by lower drug costs and co-payments, as well as increased follow-up care, according to a study published earlier this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine

    Primary nonadherence was defined as not filling an initial prescription within nine months.

    MIAMI — In an effort to prevent prescription drug abuse, and in collaboration with Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership, all 622 Publix pharmacy stores in Florida are promoting the Lock Your Meds campaign in April 2014, the supermarket chain announced Tuesday. 

  • Packaged Facts: Pet med market to reach $10 billion by 2018

    ROCKVILLE, Md. — U.S. retail sales of pet medications reached $8 billion in 2013, including sales through veterinarians, brick-and-mortar retailers and online according to a Packaged Facts report released Wednesday. This figure reflects a 2% increase over 2012 sales and a compound annual growth rate of 7% during the 2009-2013 period.

  • FDA advisory committees recommend approval of ultra rapid-acting mealtime insulin therapy

    VALENCIA, Calif. — MannKind Corp. on Tuesday announced that the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration voted 13-to-1 to recommend that Afrezza (insulin human [rDNA origin]) inhalation powder be granted marketing approval by the FDA to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 1 diabetes and voted 14-to-0 to recommend that Afrezza be granted marketing approval by the FDA to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes. 

  • FDA approves prescription hand held auto-injector designed for caregivers to treat opioid overdose

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a prescription treatment that can be used by family members or caregivers to treat a person known or suspected to have had an opioid overdose. Evzio (naloxone hydrochloride injection) rapidly delivers a single dose of the drug naloxone via a hand-held auto-injector that can be carried in a pocket or stored in a medicine cabinet. 

  • Greer Labs gets FDA approval for Oralair

    LENOIR, N.C. — Greer Labs, a developer and provider of allergy immunotherapy products and services, announced that the Food and Drug Administration has approved Oralair (Sweet Vernal, Orchard, Perennial Rye, Timothy and Kentucky Blue Grass mixed pollens allergen extract) sublingual allergy immunotherapy tablet.

  • Medicaid prescription claims on the rise

    HORSHAM, Pa. — Symphony Health Solutions on Wednesday released research on the affects of the Affordable Care Act on Medicaid drug spending.

    The research found that prescription claims for Medicaid patients increased in January by 10% and in February by 14% over the same periods last year. The study also uncovered that average out-of-pocket cost for contraceptives has dropped more than 58% since 2012.

  • Publix, Walgreens to participate in Operation Pill Drop

    DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Publix and Walgreens have partnered with a local coalition to collect expired medications, according to a report in the Delray Beach newspaper the Pineapple published Monday.  

    Beginning in April, every pharmacy in Publix and Walgreens stores in Palm Beach County will display signs with the location of the nearest pill drop-box as part of Operation Pill Drop.
