  • GSK awards $200,000 in grants to nonprofit healthcare organizations reaching underserved communities

    RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — GlaxoSmithKline on Thursday announced the five recipients of its annual GlaxoSmithKline IMPACT Awards. In total, the North Carolina and Philadelphia-area healthcare nonprofit organizations will receive $200,000 in grant funding ($40,000 each) for providing access to healthcare for the underserved in their communities.

    MIAMI and PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Regional pharmacy chain Navarro Discount Pharmacy, which operates 31 locations in south Florida, is supplying pink prescription bottle caps on all prescriptions filled during the month of October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the company has announced.

    “As a community pharmacy, we are focused on supporting activities that educate women, families and children about a variety of health issues,” stated Albert Garcia, EVP pharmacy operations at Navarro Discount Pharmacy.

  • Colgate survey shows surprising lack of awareness around diabetes and oral health

    Colgate Total and the American Diabetes Association teamed up to promote awareness for American Diabetes Month with a survey revealing people's knowledge — or lack thereof — about oral health and its association with diabetes.

    The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, found that 36% of respondents didn't know about the link between diabetes and oral health, and 66% of respondents didn't realize that people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop serious gum disease.

  • CDC: Measles on the rise

    ATLANTA — Despite achieving measles elimination in 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in its "Morbidity and Morality Weekly Report" that a total of 222 measles cases and 17 measles outbreaks were reported to the CDC last year, compared with a median of 60 cases and four outbreaks reported annually during the 2001-2010 period.

    In the United States, the incidence of measles has reached a 15-year high, the CDC said.

  • Clorox, NAHN introduce Hispanic Nurses Network

    OAKLAND, Calif. — Clorox has partnered with the National Association of Hispanic Nurses to launch a new healthcare resource for Hispanic families.

    Clorox and NAHN said the Hispanic Nurses Network consists of Spanish-speaking nurses in Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, who will act as healthcare advocates to share health information and educate Hispanics on how to keep their homes healthy through media interviews at local outlets and Q&A sessions at Facebook.com/CloroxLatino.
