    PHILADELPHIA — Older patients at high risk for heart disease who follow a Mediterranean diet rich in extra-virgin olive oil do not need to restrict calories, increase exercise or lose weight to prevent diabetes, according to an article being published in Annals of Internal Medicine that was released Monday.

    DALLAS – The Army and Air Force Exchange Service on Monday announced its continued support the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Healthy Base Initiative through the Exchange’s Operation Be Fit effort.

    Operation Be Fit is a program that offers healthier choices to authorized shoppers in the Exchange’s Main Stores, Expresses, vending machines, food courts and school meal program. It also covers athletic apparel and workout equipment in an effort to promote a healthier mind and body.

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears Holdings is encouraging members of its loyalty card program to incorporate movement into their daily lives and stay fit with a new program, the retailer said.

    Sears announced the launch of the FitStudio.com "Points for Progress" program, whereby members of the Shop Your Way loyalty card program can register for FitStudio.com, connect a fitness app or device and earn loyalty points through physical activity. Members who join the FitIn14 Challenge can early 5,000 points, equal to $5, for every 14 mi walked or run in 2014.

  • CDC's 2012 Tips From Former Smokers campaign helped more than 100,000 Americans quit smoking

    ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2012 Tips From Former Smokers campaign helped more than 100,000 Americans likely quit smoking for good, exceeding the original goal of 50,000, the agency announced Wednesday. 

    The 2013 Tips campaign generated 150,000 additional calls to quitlines and 2.8 million additional website visits.

  • NBTY donates nearly $7 million in products, money throughout 2013

    RONKONKOMA, N.Y. — In 2013, NBTY supported more than 30 organizations, including Feed The Children and International Aid, with nearly $7 million in products and money to provide sustenance, nutrition and support to those who need it most, the supplement manufacturer announced Thursday. 

    NBTY's donations to Feed The Children are estimated to have reached almost 450,000 beneficiaries, the company stated.
