  • Study: 1-in-6 older adults could be at risk for adverse drug interactions

    CHICAGO — A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine is taking a look at the potentially dangerous interactions older Americans court when taking several medications — both prescription and OTC, as well as supplements — at once. The study looked at data from the 2005-2006 and 2010-2011, comparing the two on instances of polypharmacy (concurrent use of more than five prescription medications), as well as instances of taking more than five prescription and non-prescription medicine, including OTC medication and supplements. 
  • APhA’s House of Delegates adopts new labeling, measuring policy for oral liquid meds

     
    WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association announced Thursday that its House of Delegates had voted to adopt a new policy concerning labeling and measuring of oral liquid medications at the APhA Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Md. 
     
  • The Natural Dentist urges proper oral care during cancer treatment

    MADISON, N.J. — Oral hygiene company The Natural Dentist has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about the importance of proper oral care during cancer treatment.
     
    Such oral complications as dry mouth and mouth irritations are the fourth leading side effect of chemotherapy.
     
  • CDC’s opioid prescribing guideline earns APhA support

    ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Control and prevention recently released its 2016 opioid prescribing guidelines, aimed at prescribers who recommend opioids for chronic pain outside of cancer treatment, end-of-life care and palliative care, and recommend collaborations with other healthcare professionals, including pharmacists. 
     
  • Sullivan University College of Pharmacy opens pharmacy camp for high school students

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sullivan University College of Pharmacy plans to hold its inaugural Pharmacy Camp for high school students in the classes of 2016, 2017 and 2018 who are interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy. The deadline to apply is April 18.
     
    Students will be able to stay on campus and experience the world of pharmacy and college firsthand through classroom and lab activities.
     
  • Study: Health care experience disappoints 81% of consumers

    CHICAGO — GE Healthcare Camden Group and Prophet on Wednesday published the results of a study that found about 81% of the people they surveyed are unsatisfied with their health care experience. 
     
    The study also found a gap between what providers thing they are offering and how consumers perceive the quality of their offerings, with providers overestimated consumers’ opinion on quality by more than 20%.
