  • Consumers seek more novelty, seasonal options

    Where would the candy category be without seasonal merchandise? Seasonal candy sales are a driving force in the category, with seasonal period sales accounting for 55% of the confectionary pie, according to the National Confectioners Association. Unique seasonal in-and-out items shaped and colored specifically for a season represent 22% of category sales. In 2014, NCA estimates that seasonal candy sales will account for $7 billion.

  • Jelly Belly expands Camo Beans

    FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Jelly Belly has added a second colorful, trendy bag to its line of Camo Beans — Pink Camo Beans. For every bag of Camo Beans and Pink Camo Beans sold, Jelly Belly Charities will donate $0.25 to support U.S. veterans and their families. The mix includes Cotton Candy, Coconut, Licorice, Cherry Passion Fruit Smoothie, Bubble Gum and Strawberry Cheesecake.

    The new Camo Beans are available in 3.5-oz. hanging Grab & Go bags and will be on shelf in March.

    ATLANTA — Good2grow, a line of healthy children's beverages, announced its nationwide debut at major grocery and convenience stores. The product is available in a variety of flavors and sizes and features spill-proof SippaTop caps and character toys that draw kids in. Its foray into the healthy children's beverage category is significant, the company said.

  • NPD Group augments school and office supplies retail market data with Nielsen deal

    PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The NPD Group on Thursday signed a market information services agreement with Nielsen for school and office supplies retail market data and analytic services. The agreement combines Nielsen’s market information, including sales data from food and drug channels, with NPD’s existing school and office Supplies business, which covers office superstores, mass merchants, e-commerce and other retailers.

  • Fred's focus is on pharmacy and Hometown Auto & Hardware departments going forward

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted $157.5 million in sales, representing a decline of 1%, for the four weeks ended March 1. Comparable store sales for the month decreased 2.2% compared with a decrease of 1.5% in the prior-year period.

    “In the pharmacy department, we will continue to accelerate new pharmacy acquisitions and focus on our plan for EIRIS Health Services, Fred's specialty pharmacy unit, which is experiencing solid script and sales growth in this fast-expanding segment of the pharmacy industry," noted Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO.
