WASHINGTON — Fifteen years after reaching more than $246 billion in legal settlements against the tobacco industry, most states have fallen short of spending a significant portion of the money on programs to prevent kids from smoking and help smokers quit, according to a report released Monday by a coalition of public health organizations.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Further expanding the scope of preventive healthcare services provided by its pharmacists, Walgreens as of Monday is now offering daily testing for cholesterol, blood glucose and body composition at more than 60 stores in Maryland. 

Each test also includes a free blood pressure reading and personal consultation with a Walgreens pharmacist.

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Thursday released a report finding that dietary supplementation can save the healthcare system tens of billions over the next decade. 

The report demonstrated that supplementation at preventive intake levels in high-risk populations can reduce the number of medical events associated with heart disease, age-related eye disease, diabetes and bone disease in the United States, representing the potential for significant cost savings.

NEW YORK — Nielsen Holdings on Monday named Karen Kornbluh its EVP external affairs, effective immediately. Reporting to incoming CEO Mitch Barns — who succeeds CEO David Calhoun on Jan. 1 — Kornbluh will lead Nielsen’s global work in a number of key areas, including: government and public affairs and services; privacy strategy; corporate social responsibility; and multicultural market development. She will be based in Washington but will split her time in New York.

EWING, N.J. — Church & Dwight on Thursday announced plans to expand its gummy vitamin production capacity through the addition of a new production line to be constructed at its manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania. The company will continue to manufacture gummy vitamins at its two facilities in Washington. 

Construction will begin in January 2014 and the line is scheduled to be operational in the first quarter of 2015.
