  • NAD turns Iceberg Labs over to federal regulators regarding Immune Shield claims

    NEW YORK — The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus on Tuesday referred advertising claims made by Iceberg Labs for its Immune Shield dietary supplement to the Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration for further review.

    The advertising at issue was challenged before NAD, the advertising industry’s self-regulatory forum, by the Council for Responsible Nutrition.

  • Save-A-Tooth product recommended as part of first aid kit

    WAYNE, Pa. — Phoenix-Lazerus recently announced that both the National Institutes of Health and the Mayo Clinic now recommend the company’s Save-A-Tooth product be included as part of any first aid kit.

    Phoenix-Lazarus offers a “The Complete First Aid Kit” on Amazon for $24.95. Invented by a dentist, the Save-A-Tooth is a six-part system that protects knocked-out teeth.

    According to the company, more than 5 million teeth are knocked out each year in the United States.

  • Alli set to launch chewable tablet this year in Europe

    LONDON — GlaxoSmithKline has received a license extension in Europe for its popular weight-loss pill Alli.

    The drug maker said it plans to sell new chewable tablets this spring, available at pharmacies throughout the United Kingdom.

    Alli has been available in the United Kingdom since early 2009.

  • Stiefel announces OTC switch for acne washes

    RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — GlaxoSmithKline company Stiefel has made its popular acne wash formulations available for over-the-counter use.

    Stiefel will market two products that are indicated for the treatment of acne over the counter under the PanOxyl brand: PanOxyl acne creamy wash will be available in 4% BPO and 8% BPO.

    A marketing campaign directed toward pharmacists and dermatologists will communicate details of the new PanOxyl 4% and 8% BPO acne creamy washes. The products will be available for shipment in May.

  • Kerr Drug supports Sen. Hagan's MTM legislation

    RALEIGH, N.C. — Two pharmacy trade groups already have given their blessings to legislation that would support medication therapy management, and a retail pharmacy chain that has made MTM part of its mission is following suit.

    Kerr Drug announced its support for the Medication Therapy Management Empowerment Act of 2011, which Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., recently introduced. The National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the National Community Pharmacists Association endorsed the bill last week.

  • Pfizer to acquire Ferrosan's consumer healthcare business

    NEW YORK — One of the world's largest drug makers has entered a definitive agreement to purchase a Copenhagen-based consumer healthcare business.

    Pfizer said Monday that it agreed to acquire from Altor 2003 Fund GP Limited Ferrosan’s consumer healthcare business, which includes a portfolio of such dietary supplements and lifestyle products as Multi-Tabs and Bifiform. Ferrosan caters to such markets as Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey and many countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

  • At NACDS conference, Merlo and Anderson note pharmacy victories

    NAPLES, Fla. — Pharmacy's role in the U.S. healthcare system has expanded dramatically over the past two years, thanks to several victories gained through pharmacy care and services.

    Speaking at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores' Regional Chain Conference, NACDS board chairman and CVS Caremark president and COO Larry Merlo said that scientific research has further demonstrated how care and services provided by pharmacists and pharmacies have improved health outcomes of patients and cut costs for the healthcare system.

    LOS ANGELES — Pacific Shore Holdings on Thursday launched the Energy-X SPF 30 lip balm — an “energy” lip care product infused with green tea and hoodia gordonii extracts, as well as caffeine, as an alternative to energy shots.

    Energy-X SPF 30 lip balm is available in a lemon-lime flavor for a suggested $4.99.
