  • Target acquisition bolsters delivery capabilities, brings new VP technology

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target has acquired a transportation technology company and, in the process, gotten itself a VP technology.

    Target announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire Grand Junction to improve and expand Target’s delivery capabilities and accelerate its investments and ongoing efforts to transform its supply chain. Upon the close of the deal, Rob Howard, Grand Junction’s founder and CEO, will become a VP technology at Target.

  • Dollar General holds third annual A Day of Beauty event

    GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General over the weekend held it’s a Day of Beauty event for the third year. The multicultural health and beauty event took place in downtown Nashville and featured a panel discussion that featured Larry Sims, Naja the Nail Guru, Mel J. and Char Braden, as well as a guest speaker presentation from actress and author Kim Fields and a musical performance by Vivian Green.

  • Fred’s names Alden president to board

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred’s has a new addition to its board of directors. The company on Monday announced the appointment of Alden Global Capital founding member and president Heath Freeman to the board, effective at its next meeting, which will be held on or before Aug. 29. 
     
    Freeman joins the board as part of Fred’s and Alden’s extension of their cooperation agreement into 2019 that includes updated terms about their collaborative efforts to drive shareholder value.

  • Walmart reportedly among Birchbox suitors

    Online subscription beauty retailer Birchbox may be looking to sell itself.
     
    The company has been discussing a potential sale with several retailers, including Walmart, reported Recode. If the discounter were to acquire Birchbox, it would be the chain's fifth e-commerce acquisition since last August. 
     
  • Costco names new chairman

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco has named one of its longtime directors chairman of its board of directors. The company on Thursday announced the board’s board election of Hamilton “Tony” James to the position.

    James is Blackstone Group president and COO, as well as a member of Blackstone Group Management’s board of directors. He is a member of Blackstone Management Committee and sits on each of the firm’s investment committees. James has been a director of Costco since August 1988, becoming its lead independent director in 2005.

  • TABS Analytics: Brick-and-mortar driving ecommerce growth, especially in VMS

    While everyone is focusing on pure play online giant Amazon, what they are likely missing is how brick and mortar retailers are driving ecommerce sales growth, noted TABS Analytics last week in a blog. "The TABS Analytics 10th Vitamin and Minerals Study revealed that online sales by traditional brick and mortar retailers propelled the market to an all-time high, growing an estimated 6% in the last year to reach $13.5 billion in annual sales," the company reported. "Walmart.com, specifically, had a breakout year for VMS sales. ...
