  • APhA, CDC team on fall risk training for pharmacists

    WASHINGTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Pharmacists Association have developed an online training tool on older adult fall prevention. 

    Called STEADI: The Pharmacist’s Role in Older Adult Fall Prevention, the free online training — based on the CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries initiative and accredited by the ACPE — was launched March 24 at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Francisco.

  • It's all in how you ask; a little 'nudge' increases flu shots by 37%

    PHILADELPHIA — A study released Monday suggests that a simple behavioral economics technique known as "active choice" may be able to improve flu vaccination rates. In the study, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania programmed electronic health records  to alert care providers when a patient was eligible, and prompt them to choose to "accept" or "decline" a flu vaccination order.

  • Bartell Drugs introduces specialty pharmacy service

    SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs introduced a specialty pharmacy service at all of its 65 Washington State locations.

    Some of the difficult-to-treat conditions may include cancer, hepatitis B and C, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis and a host of other medical conditions requiring very specialized medications and therapy regimens.

    “Being diagnosed and entering treatment can be overwhelming,” states Bartell’s Clinical Programs Manager, Christina Ree. “Our Specialty Pharmacy program helps take the fear out of the process and replaces it with confidence.”

  • Clinician develops new hearing aid adjustment program

    COLUMBIA, Mo. — More than half of older adults have some form of hearing loss, impacting everyday life and significantly affecting their health and safety if left untreated.

    Hearing aids are the most common treatment for hearing loss; however, many adults fail to adjust to hearing aids and, as a result, stop using them. Now, a new hearing aid adjustment program created by Kari Lane, assistant professor in the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri, might significantly improve hearing aid wear time among older adults.

  • Survey: Americans prefer pharmacy over physician when it comes to vaccines

    IRVINE, Calif. — The majority of Americans prefer visiting their local pharmacy to get their inoculations, as opposed to visiting the doctor's office, according to  the PrescribeWellness 2017 Vaccination and Preventive Care Survey.

    Of the 62% of survey respondents who chose pharmacy over practitioner, most of the reasons hinged upon convenience.
