  • Walmart makes $250K donation to Tennessee wildfires

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will provide $250,000 in support to help relief efforts for those affected by the Tennessee wildfires in Sevier County.

    The wildfires have killed 14 people, injured an additional 175 people and damaged or destroyed more than 2,400 homes and businesses, according to media reports.

  • Trump to tap fast-food exec as labor secretary

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — President-elect Donald Trump will name Andy Puzder, CEO of CKE Restaurants, as labor secretary, according to several media reports.

    Puzder, whose company operates the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s burger retail chains, has argued against raising the minimum wage to more than $9 per hour. He also has been an advocate of cutting back or eliminating regulations he claims have been a detriment to the restaurant industry and has been critical of the Affordable Care Act.

  • 21st Century Cures Act passes Senate, heads to Obama’s desk

    WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 94-5 on Wednesday to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, sending it to the desk of President Barack Obama. The act, which was passed by the House of Representatives on Nov. 30, includes funding to support the fight against prescription drug abuse and funding for the National Institutes of Health’s cancer initiative, known as Vice President Joe Biden’s “cancer moonshot” initiative, which was renamed by the Senate after Biden’s son, Beau, who died of cancer in 2015.
