  • WSJ: Soda taxes gaining steam, approved in at least 4 cities

    Voters in San Francisco, Oakland and nearby Albany, Calif., on Tuesday approved a penny-per-ounce levy on non-alcoholic drinks with caloric sweeteners, affecting everything from cola to sports drinks and ice tea to energy drinks.

    The Wall Street Journal reports that in Boulder, Colo., residents approved a ballot measure calling for a tax of two cents per ounce.

    Meanwhile in Chicago, a vote is expected this week on a penny-per-ounce tax that also would include beverages with zero-calorie sweeteners like diet soda.

  • Fred’s to offer Veteran’s Day discount for military personnel

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred’s Pharmacy announced this week that in honor of Veteran’s Day, which is on Nov. 11, the company is offering veterans, active duty military personnel, reservists and their immediate family members a 15% discount. 
     
    “Fred's Pharmacy is joining in support of our armed forces to say ‘thank you for your service,’” Fred’s EVP store operations John Foley said. “We owe our freedom to these brave men and women who work and live in our local communities.”
  • Retail CMOs predict 4.7% lift in holiday sales

    CHICAGO -- Steadily climbing consumer confidence and retail sales growth have U.S. retail CMOs feeling optimistic ahead of this holiday season.

    Respondents of BDO USA’s 11th annual Retail Compass Survey of CMOs predict a bullish 4.7% sales increase this holiday season, tied with the highest projection in the survey’s history. This is also more optimistic than the National Retail Federation’s expected 3.6% increase.

    LOS ANGELES - With a growing footprint at traditional grocery retailers, E-hydrate, the maker of natural Protein On-the-Go, recently secured distribution through Walgreens, which added E-hydrate's two flagship SKUs in the top locations across the country.

    "Customers are now actively on the lookout for healthier choices when they're on-the-go," stated Jiam Kayser, E-hydrate chief sales officer. "Walgreens is right in line with our philosophy, and we're excited about the new focus on healthy food choices at Walgreens."

  • Walgreens to honor veterans, active duty military, with Veterans Day discount

    DEERFIELD, Ill. - Walgreens on Tuesday announced its Veterans Day discount to all veterans, active duty military personnel and their immediate family members. On Friday, Nov. 11, customers with a Walgreens Balance Rewards card and valid military ID or proof of service will receive 20% off regular price eligible store items at any Walgreens or Duane Reade drug store nationwide.

  • Fred’s offering flu vaccines as season kicks off

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Highlighting the more than 200,000 people hospitalized as a result of complications from the flu, Fred’s pharmacy announced Tuesday that it will be offering flu vaccines to help patients proactively protect against the flu. 
     
    Fred’s said that its pharmacists would work with patients to figure out which version of the flu vaccine is best for them. The company also noted that flu vaccines are free with most insurance plans, though copays may apply.
