  • Report paints hopeful picture for retail industry

    ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A just-released analysis of the U.S. retail sector offers positive news for an industry that has been subject to some gloomy assessments in recent times.

    Despite the rash of recent Chapter 11 filings and store closings, the U.S. retail sector as a whole remains incredibly strong and shows no signs of slowing down, according to a report by business intelligence firm Creditsafe USA.

  • Survey: Lack of in-store personalization can lose retailers money

    TEWKSBURY, Mass. — Disappointing shopping experiences are costing brick-and-mortar retailers serious money.

    That’s according to the recent TimeTrade State of Retail 2017 survey, whose results suggest that U.S. retail stores left about $150 billion in potential revenue on the table in 2016 by failing to offer shoppers the personalized shopping experiences they want.  

    Respondents said that, on average, they would increase their in-store spending by 4.7% if they received better, more personalized service from retailers.  

  • Jobless claims at lowest level since 1973

    WASHINGTON — The Miami Dolphins had just completed an undefeated season, winning Super Bowl XII by a score of 14-7 over the Washington Redskins. Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly with His Song” was No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

    The date was March 31, 1973, the last time initial jobless claims were lower than today’s figures, released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor. In March 1973, initial jobless claims were 222,000.

  • Pew Research: Vast majority of Americans support vaccination mandates

    WASHINGTON — Most Americans support requiring the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine for public school children in order to protect public health, the Pew Research Center reported Thursday. Responding a survey prior to the election, Americans believe there are high preventive health benefits of such vaccines, and low risk of side effects, and they consider the benefits of the vaccine to outweigh the risks.

  • Perception Institute releases results of ‘Good Hair’ Study

    NEW YORK — The Perception Institute on Tuesday released the results of its “Good Hair” Study, an examination of implicit and explicit attitudes toward black women’s hair, for which it collaborated with Sundial Brands, makers of SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage. 
     
  • Analyst: ‘Still chance of a reasonable outcome’ for Walgreens-Rite Aid deal

    NEW YORK — An Evercore ISI analyst maintained his “buy” rating on Walgreens Boots Alliance stock, stating that although its proposed deadline for a deal with Rite Aid has been delayed, “there is still a chance of a reasonable outcome for both parties.”

    The companies pushed back the deadline for merger from Jan. 27 to July 31 and trimmed the purchase price paid to Rite Aid to $6.50 to $7 per share — based upon the number of store divestitures the FTC requires — from $9 per share.

  • Friday is the Walgreens-Rite Aid merger deadline

    DEERFIELD, Ill.  — The day some analysts thought would never come has arrived. On Friday, Jan. 27, the deadline expires for the pending acquisition of Rite Aid by Walgreens Boots Alliance for $9 per share in cash (representing a $17.2 billion deal including the acquired net debt).
